Returning Home - Finalist, Mid West Art Prize 2023
Returning Home is an ink-on-paper SoulCircle about coming back, not only to a place, but to yourself.
The work was made here in Geraldton, the town where I grew up. But it speaks to something quieter than geography. That inner returning. The moment you recognise something familiar beneath the surface of yourself, beyond movement, time or distance. A remembering rather than an arriving.
The circular form holds both motion and stillness at once. The way we travel outward through life and then, at certain moments, feel drawn back toward an inner centre. For me, Returning Home is about that point of arrival where nothing needs to be proven or resolved. Just recognised.
I'm also drawn to how this work functions in space, how a single piece can change the pace of a room. Slow attention. Invite pause. Particularly in places of transition, where people are moving rather than lingering, there's something quietly powerful about a work that says you can stop here.
To be selected as a finalist in the Mid West Art Prize 2023 with this piece felt particularly meaningful. To have Returning Home acknowledged in the region that shaped both my life and my practice, that was its own kind of circle. Gently closed. And opened again.
