Lynda Howitt’s lifelong love for the ocean is reflected in her paintings.

Her work radiates a warmth that is compelling, perhaps due to the universal qualities of her subject matter, but also because of her unique vision, in which the opposite elements of nature are successfully merged as to become a single entity. 

There is a sense of weightlessness and light that embodies her work. Artworks are predominately in a primarily monochromatic palette of softly modulating muted hues. Some with up lifting highlights and strokes suggesting clouds or waves breaking, the sea and sky are interwoven, barely distinguishable. She has less interest in depicting specifics of nature than in evoking a sense of emotion. 

Howitt explores the expression of an inner state of being, aiming to inspire the soul and awaken the inner essence of the viewer. Painting from this state of inner stillness, quietness and love she hopes to offer a bridge into your inner world.

“For me art is about what I feel. Art is transformal in itself. It can change how you feel. It takes us into our inner world, the world of visions and feelings, it’s a journey inward.”

The tradition of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting can be seen in Howitt’s work. The sense of chromatic nuance, subtle gesture and lyricism makes her compositions exhilarating. There is an openness to them that creates an extraordinary resonance.

Born in Uganda, Lynda fled the massacre of Idi Amin with her family to the shores of Western Australia. An idyllic childhood growing up on the beach in Geraldton set the scene for this love of the ocean. 

Her affinity with nature and the sense of light and space has been instilled from an early age in Australia and continues to be a guiding influence on her work. 

After a degree and highly successful career as a Creative Director in London and Sydney she now devotes all her time to painting. Her works hang in homes around the world.

Howitt is currently represented in New York by June Bateman Fine Art.

Highlights of Howitt’s career include winning ‘Australia’s richest art prize’ The Signature of Sydney in 2006. Her art is in demand with the “seduced by the sea” series selling out.
